CONGREGATIONS ON THE CEM WEBSITE

Are you looking for better ways to connect with members and friends of the Community of Christ in North America and around the world? Are you curious about how to make your congregation more visible on the web? Do you want to invite people to church through online tools? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, the help is here for you!

James Clark of the GTA-West congregation has offered to help all congregations to be more visible in the online world. James is well-versed in the use of Social Media, including Facebook, Twitter and Email newsletters. James is willing to show you some of the things that he has done for the Wiarton Congregation and show how it can help your congregations in mission. Most importantly, James is willing to help facilitate the development and maintenance of these three tools for your congregation. There is no charge for this service.

To become a social media guru, to find out how James can help or to get more information, please contact James at: jamesweclark@gmail.com

Friends,

I am pleased to announce that the following members of Canada East Mission have accepted calls to the ministry of High Priest in Community of Christ.

Paul Fitzgeorge
Pamela Mooney
John Nichols
Joan Thompson

Each of these four has received the necessary approval for their call from the First Presidency and the Council of Twelve. Their calls will be considered at the Canada East Mission Conference on October 16 of this year. A service of ordination is also being planned to occur at the conference.

I invite your prayerful consideration and support for these persons. Each of the candidates is already fully engaged in roles appropriate to a High Priest within the mission centre, either as a Mission Advocate or Mission Advocate Team Leader. Their gifts and skills are already a blessing to the church.

Operations Manager Appointment at CEM

June 24, 2011

Dear Members and Friends of Canada East Mission,

It is with great joy that I announce a new addition to the CEM staff. Elder Tim Stanlick of the Guelph congregation is joining our team effective July 1, 2011. Tim has been assigned the role of Operations Manager.

Tim’s first task will be to assemble a cross-Canada team to plan and organize the many details of the June 16, 2012 Canadian National Conference. Over time, he will also take over some of the responsibilities that currently fall on the desk of the Mission President. This will allow me to work more effectively on the goals outlined in the 2020 Vision first presented at the 2009 Mission Conference.

Tim’s business career as well as his experience in ministry, including time in pastoral leadership, have prepared him well for this role. All of us in the office are excited to welcome Tim, and look forward to working with him. His positive outlook, thoughtful approach, and calm manner will be a blessing to Canada East Mission.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Tim as we continue our quest to fulfill the Mission of Jesus Christ.

Carman Thompson
Mission President

Special Guest Speaker Mike Nickerson at Healing & Freeing Retreat

Join us in this great opportunity to hear a well-known speaker, Mike Nickerson, Canadian Author, Speaker, Researcher, ENVIRONMENTALIST

Will be the Weekend Guest Speaker at the Healing and Freeing Retreat July 15 – 22, 2011

Mike is from Lanark, Ontario but his message of sustainable living is universal and so timely in our society today..
So what does sustainable living have to do with spirituality and consciousness? Everything!
Every single day, every single choice you make from what you eat, what kind of a car you drive to how much water or electricity you use affects the environmental resources, the future of the planet and our collective happiness. Every day you can choose to make these choices consciously from a point of unity for the whole planet, rather than the singularity of selfishness or greed.

Mike explains where his passion came from for spreading this message, how economic growth and decline really works, how to live within planetary limits, voluntary simplicity and so much more! Mike offers ideas and explains how we can become part of the solution, and be guardians of the Earth to ensure a viable and promising future.

Mike leaves us with the question of direction – “where we are going, depends on what we see as the goal for our future” and shares some breakthrough ideas of how we can work less and have more, as we take on a mature role of caring for our home – planet Earth..

In the context of today’s society, a more-bigger-better mentality could mean the end of us. "Now that we have reached planetary limits and our biggest problems come from our size, we have to look at and reassess whether we want to continue to grow until we drop or aim for sustainability." The industrialized world’s consumer culture of the 20th century is where the culpability lies. According to Nickerson, "We are human beings, not human havings."

News from World Church

3 May 2011

To the church:

It is with deep humility that I have requested early retirement and release from my full-time church responsibilities and leadership roles in the Council of Twelve Apostles. This change will allow me the freedom to give added support to the ongoing needs of our 5-year-old grandson, Matthew, who was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease over three years ago. This difficult decision would not be possible without the love and support of my wife, Jan, and our family. I am deeply grateful for the pastoral support that has been extended to my family and to me by the First Presidency in granting this request.

The church and its mission have been my life calling and vocation for 24 years. Words cannot adequately express the blessings I have experienced as I have traveled throughout the church and witnessed the life changing power of God’s grace expressed through relationships shaped and molded by Christian community. Thank you Community of Christ for all the ways you share Christ’s peace in our world! Your lives of service to God and community are a living testimony of Christ’s peace.

I am blessed by the loving, caring support of my colleagues in the Council of Twelve, World Church Leadership Council, International Leadership Council, and our office staff. Their devotion and response to God’s call to lead the church in mission is beyond reproach. I will miss our insightful conversations about the church’s mission, worship experiences that refresh my dry soul, laughter that breaks through the tension of difficult discussions, and tears that express the depth of our caring for one another and the people we serve. They are, and will always be, a special part of my life.

May God’s blessings continue to find expression through the lives of our members, friends, and congregations around the world is my hope and prayer.

In Christ’s peace,

James E. Slauter
President of the Council of Twelve and Director of Field Ministries

Attention All Lifeguards!!

The Community of Christ is beginning its summer Lifeguard hiring process. We are looking for individuals who are 18 years of age or older who have either Bronze Cross Certification or National Life Saving Certification. See Waterfront Supervisor Job Description and Waterfront Director Job Description for specific details.

We are asking all members of the Community of Christ to extend this invitation to individuals they know have these certifications even if they are not members of the church. All Lifeguards must be certified as youth workers within the church. However, as long as the individual(s) is known by a church member for 6 or more months this process can be completed before they begin work in the summer. In order to expand our hiring pool we must reach individuals who are members and individuals who are not members.

Please forward this to anyone you trust and feel is responsible, and meets the criteria stated above. Your assistance is greatly appreciated by the Lifeguard Program and Canada East Mission Centre.

Thank you,
Tamara Taylor-Wright
